1/2 Marathon Training!

This Sunday, December 18th, we'll have our kick-off informational meeting!

Where: The new Nashville Running Company.  Right next to the post office on Woodland in East Nashville.  Across from Rumors East.

What: We'll start the morning with a 5.35 mile run.   (There are several ways to adjust this route to make it shorter.)  Then we'll have a brief informational meeting about the 1/2 marathon training and the couch to 5k program.

When: Run starts at 9 a.m. (ish), the meeting will probably start around 10.

One final note:  If you are planning on running the 1/2 marathon, you should probably sign up soon.  Like now.  I think that the entry fee jumps by $20 in January.  Also if you put in the code CMMCLUB, you get $10 off your entry fee.

Another final note: This year, we are looking to have some pace group leaders.  Group leaders would take charge of a group with a particular goal time by leading the Sunday runs and hopefully even running the race at the necessary pace to hit the desired goal.  If this describes you: please sign up at the meeting, or send me (Mark) and email at millema6@hotmail.com.

By the way: This video confirms what we all know and is 100% worth the 9 minutes it takes to watch.  After watching, pass it on to your friends to encourage them to join our couch to 5k training!  (I was particularly amazed that exercise ameliorates many of the negative consequences associated with obesity...)

See you on Sunday!

December 14th, 2011 (Christmas Party Night!)

Wednesday night could just be one of the last warmer East Nasty runs for a couple of months. Weather.com is promising a clear night with a 67 degree temp., which is just about perfect running weather. We will be doing route #5, WALKING BRIDGE. Awesome run into downtown and back then afterwards head on over to the Christmas Party (details below.) Learn the route as we will need pace leaders.

Christmas Party Details

Where: Phil and Gretchen Zimmerman's lovely home, 1306 Woodland

What to Bring:  Bring a bowl and spoon and $5.    The bowl and spoon are because we’ll have lots of chili – and we don’t want to throw away 100 plastic bowls.  The $5 is so that we can renew our RRCA club dues.

Pretty straight forward. It is a great way to hangout, catch-up and even meet fellow East Nasties.

Hope to see all of you there!

A repeat of last week's post:

The 1/2 Marathon training

Once again, for 2012, East Nasty will offer free 1/2 marathon training.  Mark your calendars for December 18th.  (Sunday)  On that morning, we will have a run/information meeting at 9 am at the new Nashville Running Company.   It is not required, but it’s a great way to start the training.  That morning we’ll go for a short run, and then talk through the various training programs.   Feel free to email me if you have any questions.  (If you can’t make this meeting, just show up at 9am January 8th outside the nature center in Shelby Park.)

Big night tomorrow nasties - The East Nasty Christmas party is always a blast - be there

December 7th, 2011

You know that winter has arrived when the forecast includes "a sleet/snow mix".  But don't let falling temperatures scare you away from running.  It is actually easier/safer to run in the cold than in the heat.  Just wear two layers, a hat, gloves and reflective gear!  My rule of thumb is to dress as though you are taking a hike in weather that is 20 degrees warmer than the current temperature.  For example, if it is 40 degrees, dress like you are hiking in 60 degree weather.  You may be a little chilly at the start, but once you get going you'll be perfect. Christmas Party

Now on to more important matters...

December 14th is our annual Christmas Party.  It's hosted by Phil and Gretchen Zimmerman and we want everyone to be there.  1306 Woodland.  It is one of the best ways to get to know more of the nasties.  Here is what you need to do: come.  And then bring a bowl and spoon and $5.    The bowl and spoon is because we'll have lots of soup - and we don't want to throw away 100 plastic bowls.  The $5 is so that we can renew our RRCA club dues.

Also if you would be willing to bring a side or dessert, please sign up here.

The 1/2 Marathon

Once again, for 2012, East Nasty will offer free 1/2 marathon training.  Mark your calendars for December 18th.  (Sunday)  On that morning, we will have a run/information meeting at 9 am at the new Nashville Running Company.   It is not required, but it's a great way to start the training.  That morning we'll go for a short run, and then talk through the various training programs.   Feel free to email me if you have any questions.  (If you can't make this meeting, just show up at 9am January 8th outside the nature center in Shelby Park.)

I wish he went to my school...

How about a 17 year old Ethiopian kid running 1:43 in the 800 en route to beating the world champion.... Hard to believe.  Enjoy this article.

Run #4 this week.  Check it out and please volunteer to be a pace leader!

November 30...

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and feel ready to face the holiday season in full force.  Just to reassure everyone, we have not missed a Wednesday run since June 2008, and will be meeting all through December!

Christmas Party

Post run on December 14th, we will have our 4th annual East Nasty Christmas Party.  Phil and Gretchen Zimmerman will be hosting (1306 Woodland)  - an easy 3 minute walk from our 11th and Holly meeting location.   Everyone is welcome, and here's how its going to work:

Bring a bowl and spoon.  Sounds strange, but we're going to have a (giant) pot of white chicken chili and one of butternut squash soup.  So to save the environment and the Zimmerman's dish washer, we are asking everyone to bring their own dish and spoon.  What else can you bring?  I'm glad you asked:

Bring $5.  It's time for us to renew our RRCA membership.  It costs us $5 per member.  So please help us out and bring $5 and take a moment to give us your mailing address... (We'll have a sign in sheet at the party.)

Dessert / Sides.  Show off your holiday cooking skills, or just buy something at the store... Like I said, we will have soups, so we just need some sides and desserts.  Sign up for something here.

Yourself.  This is a great time to get better acquainted with your fellow runners.  So if you feel a little lost on Wednesday nights in this giant group of runners - plan on joining us for this fun annual event.

1/2 Marathon Training

Every year since 2004, East Nasty has offered 1/2 marathon training geared toward the Country Music 1/2 Marathon.   This year is no different and we'll be starting on January 8th at 9 am at the nature center at Shelby Bottoms.

More details will be coming soon, but while our training is free, the country music marathon is not.  So if you are planning on running you need to sign up before January 1.   The organizers of the race were kind enough to offer us a discount code for $10 off online registration.  Use the code CMMCLUB when you sign up on line.  They also told me that they were going to have some sort of discount mid-December.    Here is the website.  I'm not sure what they are going to offer mid-December, JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU SIGN UP BEFORE 2012 TO SAVE YOURSELF $30.

New Route

This week we will be crossing the pedestrian bridge as part of a brand new route.  We are basically going to cross the bridge and head up Demonbreun as far as you want to go before turning around and retracing your steps.  Check out the map of Route #3 to make your own plan. If you go all the way around the round-about it will be 6.5 miles.

Wednesday - November 23rd - 2011

Hello East Nasties and how are you ? Tomorrow is Thanksgiving eve and yes we will be running. Since we are expecting a little bit of a lighter crew we are going to run route #1 again ( one hilly 5k ). We are going to wait until next week to unveil route #3 which is another new route being added to the East Nasty rotation. For now though let us focus on the present. We are running route #1 again tomorrow and will be headed down to 3 crow afterwards for some pre-holiday celebrating if you will. Please take a quick look at the route over on the right hand side of the page and please come out and join us if you are in town.

East Nasty Christmas Party

The date and the party is set. We will be having our annual Christmas party on December 14th following the run at 7:00. The party will be at Phil Zimmerman's house who lives within walking distance from where we start on 11th and Holly. All East Nasties are invited. We will be having chili and whatever sides / deserts you want to bring. There will be a sign up list posted here on the website soon so please check back here so you can sign up for what you would like to bring. There will also be beer served at the party. This is always a great event each year so go ahead and mark your calendar so you can plan on joining us. More info to follow about the sign ups for what to bring.

Flying Monkey Marathon

A special shout out to those East Nasties who ran the flying monkey marathon this past weekend. The monkey is known for being one of the hardest marathons in the country and this past Sunday was a rough day for then runners. It poured rain for 90% of the race but the runners and especially the East Nasties out there kept pressing on with a smile on their face.  Truly and impressive accomplishment for all runners who were out there battling the hills and elements.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone - hope to see you out there soon  ---- East Nasty For Life !!!

Hello East Nasties - I hope everyone enjoyed the new route last week. We will have another new route for you next week. For tomorrow though we will be running route #2 known as "around the lake". The route is 3.65 miles long and even though the forecast says we may get some rain tomorrow we all know very well that weather never effects an East Nasty Wednesday night. Please take a look at the route and be first in line to volunteer tomorrow to be a pace leader. Who knows maybe I will even explain the correct route before the run this week.

East Nasty Christmas party

The date has not been set in stone yet but it will be within the next few days. The location is about 99% nailed down though and the party will be coming up very soon. So why the announcement ?  Just a little heads up to be thinking about staying after a Wednesday night run in December and bring some food with you for all to enjoy. More to follow tomorrow night or in next week's blog.

That is all for now nasties - hope to see you out tomorrow night for a night run on the east side ............................ ENFL  !!!!!!!

Hello East Nasty - are you guys ready to run a new route ? Tomorrow will be the first time that we get to run the new route #1 which will be known as " one hilly 5k ". The name pretty much tells you all that you need to know. The route very simple and not that bad as far as hills are concerned. The weather tomorrow night is supposed to be very runner friendly yet again. With the time change this past weekend we will be in the dark for the rest of the year so remember to wear something reflective out there. Be sure to study the new route #1 down on the right and volunteer to lead a pace group.

Shirts

If you ordered a shirt on the website then be sure to pick yours up ( if you haven't already ) either before or after the run. Not sure if the men's singlets are in yet - we will not know until tomorrow. After another week we should have some extra's on sale if your were not able to order a shirt in time.

Volunteers for cup duty

After this week we do not have anyone signed up for cleaning the cups. This is a very simple way to help out and give back to East Nasty so be sure to click on the volunteer link at the top of this page and put your name down for a wednesday coming up.

That's right, the time is here again.  Tomorrow is the infamous route #12, known around the globe  as "The Nasty."  Those of you who have run this route know why it is called the nasty.  Those of you who have not run it, come out tomorrow and find out for yourself.  Make sure to claim your East Nasty sticker after completing the nasty.  For those of you who are not feeling up for the full 6 mile run, there will be an alternate version called "nasty light" that is around 3 miles.  Most all of tomorrow's run will be in the dark.  Please remember to show up for the run in your reflective gear.  Please check out route #12 on the right side of the page and learn the route as we will need pace leaders. I run for the Party

Please remember that one of our East Nasty regulars Emmit Martin (owner/operator) of the ” I run for the party ” race series. He could use come volunteers - Here are some opportunities for the upcoming races going on before the end of the year.

Nov 12th Nashville 1/2 Marathon http://www.irunfortheparty.com/index.php?page=events_view&event_id=22

  • Need volunteers for Nashville half marathon
  • Need people to cheer along the course
  • If you live along the course In east Nashville on Fatherland – cheer stations are welcome
  • Need Bikers to help monitor course and watch for people that may be hurt etc..

Dec 3rd Bridge To Bridge 4 Mile Run

  • Run all three bridges downtown and help us raise angel tree gifts for Salvation Army. Reports from Amanda is that we up are to 4,500 families who have registered for Angel Tree, which means that will equate to somewhere around 18,000+ Angels.  That is up 38% from last year.  As we continue to accept applications today and finalize numbers, we have to consider how we are going to drive donors to adopt these angels.  We have been blessed with our partnership with I Run for the Party.  You are providing The Salvation Army additional resources to serve these angels.   We think by eliminating the number 1,000 out of the ads that it will not limit us to the number of runners and people that we need to serve.  Let’s run for as many angels as we possibly can!
Dec 31st Resolution Run 5k & 1 mile
The Resolution Run is now managed & owned by IRFTP Keep an eye out for the new & improved Resolution Run on Dec 31st as part of the Music City Bowl and Nashville New Years eve celebration

UPDATE: If you ordered an East Nasty hoodie or Pearl Izumi long sleeve shirt, they will be available for pickup after the run tonight!
