Way behind...

This post is really late...but luckily nothing besides the run is going on this week!  Including no Tabata workout this Friday.  Remember if you want to join the Lasty Nasties (walk/runners) you need to get there by 5:45.

Wednesday, 6 a.m. or 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.  (Rain or shine...)

Wednesday, July 3rd

Are you new?

I completely understand that our website is not the easiest to navigate.   So if you are a new person, let me quickly highlight our Wednesday run:

Wednesdays 6 p.m. (or 6 a.m.) at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.

We meet year round on Wednesdays. (We have not missed a Wednesday run since June 2008...)  Additionally, from Memorial Day to Labor Day we also have a group that leaves from the same place and runs the exact same route at 6 a.m.  (We also have some crazies who do both.)   We rotate through 12 different routes sequentially.    So until you memorize the routes, it really helps if you take a moment to look at the map we provide each week.   If you complete run #12 (our hardest), you earn yourself a sticker and become an official East Nasty.

When you get to our meeting location (once again, the corner of 11th and Holly), you'll notice that there are a lot of people.  Don't worry, we don't all run at once!   First, we have a group of walk/runners who leave about 15-20 minutes early each week.  (They proudly call themselves the Lasty Nasties, and if "walk/runner" describes you, don't hesitate to join them!)  At about 6:08, we ask that you give us about 2 minutes of your attention as we make some announcements.  Finally we split into pace groups and those groups head out about a minute apart.  Why do we split into smaller groups?  Because the streets are not closed!  Please keep this in mind as you run.   This is not a closed-course race, so don't run in the middle of the road.

We provide water/gatorade, but you'll notice that we use reusable cups.  This is great for reducing the amount of waste produced by runners (have you ever thought through how much garbage one marathon produces!!!) but it means a little more work.  Please consider washing the cups for us.   If you are a regular, can you commit to doing it once a year?!  We easily have 52 regulars, meaning that we could have a different person washing cups every week. Volunteer HERE.

Bring a change of clothes (or not...) because a lot of folks head out to 3 Crow afterwards for 2-4-1 beers.  Alternatively, there are lots of great local restaurants that are packed with Nasties on Wednesday nights, including a new place right around the corner called Tenn Sixteen.   Year round, Nashville Running Company has a pint night once a month, and over the summer, I Dream of Weenie is going to have an East Nasty night once a month as well.   Long time Nasties: invite someone new to join you this week!   Maybe you can even convince Zach Barnett to buy them a beer...

Finally, please get in the habit of looking at the blog, because (1) we display a map of the route, and (2) this is the place where we try to post most of our announcements.

Run #3

This is our only out-and-back route, so you can really pick any desired distance.  Here are two shorter options: (1) if you run over the walking bridge and back that is 4 miles, (2) If you run up Demonbreun to 8th and back that is about 5 miles.

Route #3

Tabata

Our Friday morning Tabata sessions have been well attended and fun.  (Thanks Christa!)   We will be doing them for the rest of the summer, but WE ARE TAKING THIS FRIDAY OFF.  Sleep in this Friday, but be ready to come back next week...

Run #2

6 a.m. or 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.  (Yes that's right, if you are a morning runner you can meet us at 6 a.m.)

Run #2

This run takes us through Shelby Park where we will probably run into the potato to tomato training group.    This year we have an amazing 324 people who have signed up.  Be sure to encourage these future East Nasties if you happen to run into them.

Speaking of potato to tomato...sign up for the Tomato Fest 5k!   This is our race...it starts and finishes right around the corner, and it benefits the Margaret Maddux YMCA.

On all our runs, remember safety first!  Always be aware of your surroundings even when you are in Shelby Park.  Be sure to yield to traffic at intersections and always leave room for walkers and strollers!

See you on Wednesday!

Back to Run #1, Potato to Tomato, and The Return of Drew Jones

Run #1: One Hilly 5k

This week we're back to the beginning - Run #1. Join us on Wednesday at either 6 a.m. or 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly. (We have Wednesday 6 a.m. runs from Memorial to Labor Day.) You may notice that many of the regulars are missing on Wednesday evening. That is because about 40 East Nasties have volunteered to be coaches in our Potato to Tomato program.  (They'll be back in 8 weeks with a fresh group of new runners!)  What that means is we need new help on Wednesday evenings - many of you will have to (a) wash the cups, and (b) lead the routes.  Please sign up here to be a cup washer, and please be proactive about learning the route and volunteering to lead!  Drew is in charge for the next 12 weeks and he will call you out in front of everybody if you don't step up!

Wednesday June 12: The Nasty

Lots of great stuff this week!   The Nasty, hotdogs, Tabata, women's half training and the beginning of the journey for new runners.

The Nasty

Once every 12 runs, Nashvillians get a chance to earn their sticker.  Their East Nasty sticker that is...

Remember you can run with us at 6 a.m. or 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, and we meet at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.

It's supposed to be pretty hot on Wednesday, so make sure to hydrate this week, and bring some water with you on the run.

The Nasty

I Dream of Weenie Night

This summer I dream of weenie has decided to keep the van open for us every second Wednesday of the month.  Every hot dog is $3, and because it's on private property, you can BYOB.   Plan on sticking around after the run for a Rebel Yelp, or Chinese Foo Dog or the Vidalia Onion Marmalade Weenie!

Friday Morning Tabata

Need to add some strength to your endurance?  Come join us on Friday mornings for an intense, body-weight Tabata workout.  We meet at the East Park Playground.  Warm-up begins at 6:15 a.m., workout starts at 6:30 and we'll be finished before 7 a.m.  We're going to try these for three weeks, and if there is enough interest, we'll offer them all summer.  Sound like fun?  Bring water.  Email Christa Poremba at cporemba226@yahoo.com with questions or just show up Friday morning.

Potato to Tomato

The 2013 potato to tomato training starts this Saturday, June 15th.  19 of our 24 workouts will be at Shelby Park by the Nature Center, but this Saturday (June 15th) we will meet at Nashville Running Company at 7 a.m.

Women's Half

East Nasty has a group of ladies training for the women's half marathon in September.  They do long runs on Sunday mornings starting this week.  Email Alyce Scrivner if you are interested a-scrivner@comcast.net.

See you on Wednesday!

Potato to Tomato

Do you know someone who wants to get started running, but doesn't know how to get motivated?  Is that person you??  Then you need to join East Nasty's Potato to Tomato training program.  Details are available here, or better yet, attend our informational session at the Margaret Maddox YMCA at 11 a.m. this Saturday.  The program starts on Saturday June 15th.

Something new...

Here at East Nasty we believe running is awesome.  In the world of exercise, there is something unique about distance running that really can't be replicated.   But... we also know that man (and woman) cannot live on distance running alone.  (Especially as we get ...ahem....older.  Some strength work is essential.)  Enter East Nasty Friday Tabata.  Christa Poremba (NRC employee who had the amazing opportunity to help train Tim Tebow, Brady Quinn, Missy Franklin and several MMA fighters while she was out in Denver) has agreed to lead us through some intense, quick, body weight circuit workouts.   Here are some details:

Where: East Park by the playground.

When: Friday mornings starting June 14th.  Dynamic Warm-Up starts at 6:15 a.m., workout starts at 6:30 and will be finished by 7:00.

Who: Anyone.  Workouts will be scaled to any ability.

I think that this is going to be a great addition to our summer repertoire.  We're going to gauge interest over the last three Fridays in June (14th, 21st and 28th).  If enough people are interested we'll do them all summer.  If you are interested first google Tabata, then email Christa at cporemba226@yahoo.com.   If you're not sure, just show up at 6:15 a.m. on June 14th and try it out.

Back to Running

Wednesday, June 5th at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville (remember, we meet at 6 a.m. or 6 p.m. take your pick).

Remember, safety is our primary concern.  Whenever we have to cross a street, be sure to cross at an intersection!

Route #11.

Route #11: Churches

Shoe Drive

We need your shoes!   If you have an old pair of running shoes laying around, bring them on Wednesday and we'll find them a new home.   If you are new to East Nasty, we have been collecting used running shoes for a couple of years now, and have given away hundreds of pairs.  We can use any pair of running shoes that have some life left in them.  If you have a pair,  we need you to (1) wash your shoes (just throw them in the washing machine) and (2) bring them on Wednesday.  That's it - we'll find them a new pair of feet.

Wednesday Morning Runs

Not a fan of the heat?  Have trouble getting to Wednesday night runs? Join us at 6 a.m.   From Memorial Day to Labor Day, show up at 6 a.m. at 11th and Holly for a morning version of the East Nasty run.  There is nothing to sign up for, just show up!

Women's half marathon

East Nasty has a group that trains for the women's half marathon in September.  Come this Wednesday for details and a chance to register at a discount!

Being Good Neighbors

This week I want to talk about running safely.  Running with a group, (or music for that matter) can sometimes cause you to run distracted.  And since the roads are not closed every Wednesday, distracted running can be dangerous.  Here are two rules of the road that I want you to remember this week:

(1) Do not just run through intersections, and make sure you follow all traffic signals.

(2) Stay on the sidewalks, and if you must run in the road, run no more than 2 abreast.

Remember, running with 250 people is different than running by yourself.  If you dash across the road, chances are the people behind you are going to do the same.

Run #10: Benji Version 2

This is one of my favorite routes because it goes to the other side of Eastland, but we need to be very careful as we go through the intersection at 14th and Woodland.   (Refer back to the previous paragraph: be careful at intersections!)

Lots of fun stuff this week, please read!

Congratulations KIPP Track Team

KIPP Track 2013

Here is an update on the KIPP Track Team from their Coach William Quin:

KIPP Boys finished 6th in the Middle School Metro League out of approximately 36 teams. We had one young man win the City Championship in the 400 meters with a time of 56.10, and we had another young man finish second in the hurdles with a time of 16.34. Finally, we had a young man finish third in the shot put in the city with a throw of 44’8.5”. Finally, our 4x400 meter relay team finished 4th at the City Championship.

Lots of victories, lots of improvement, and lots of fun.  Thank you for all of the donations!

Volunteer

We need folks to sign up to be cup washers.  Free community organizations like East Nasty cannot rely on the same 10-20 people week in week out.  Please don't just enjoy the fun without sharing in the work!   Details about volunteering are here, and here is the google document which has all the cup volunteers.  Fill in one of the open spots!

Potato to Tomato

Do you know someone who wants to get in shape/lose weight/adopt a healthier life style?  We can help.  Our FREE couch to 5k program starts on June 15th and ends with the Tomato Festival 5k.    I may be biased, but this is the best, most successful training program for beginners in Nashville!   Our informational meeting is on Saturday June 8th at 11 a.m. at the Margaret Maddox YMCA.  To help us plan, we need participants to sign up.  Click here for more details.

Run #8: Rick's Market, Coldest Beer in Town

Wednesday night, 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.

Run #8: Rick's Market: Coldest Beer In Town

Potato to Tomato

Our couch to 5k program is coming in about a month.  Information, including registration, is available here.  (Note: our program is free, but you still need to sign up for the actual race.)

1) We still need a couple more coaches.  If you are interested, send Mark an email (mark@eastnastyforlife.com)

2) Any one else interested in helping in a non-coaching role?   This program is a great way to get involved in the community, and if you would like to be a part in any way let me know.

3) Sponsor.  Everything we do is free, but that doesn't mean it doesn't costs us anything, and one thing we have wanted to do for years is give away East Nasty shirts to the participants.  (Right now we charge them $10, if they want a shirt.)   Is there someone who would like to partner with us to help offset some of those costs?  Let me know!

4) Get someone to join...  Send a friend the link with information.  Then join us at our information session at the Margaret Maddux YMCA on June 8th at 11:00 a.m.

Run #7

Little Hollywood.  Wednesday night, 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly.  The route takes us down Eastland Ave, and there is a short section where the sidewalk disappears.  Remember to run single file on this section.

#7 Little Hollywood

Bring $3...

This is "I Dream of Weenie" week.  Read more about this business here, but what you need to know is that they are staying open late this Wednesday, and everything on the menu will be $3.   It looks like it will be a beautiful night to hang outside after the run.  Here are details:

Wednesday night Weenie Night!  I Dream of Weenie has offered to extend its hours on Wednesday nights for runners needing to carb-up prior to heading to 3 Crow Bar.  Starting next Wednesday, May 8, I Dream of Weenie is offering a special East Nasty price of $3/per menu item (or $2.50 for the basic hot dog), so stop by after your run!.  Because I Dream of Weenie is on private property, BYOB is permissible, just be conscientious of open container laws & don’t wander off the I Dream of Weenie lawn.  A cooler will be provided.  I Dream of Weenie accepts cash & credit cards.

Potato to Tomato

Every year we offer a free couch to 5k program that we call Potato to Tomato.   Details will be posted soon, but let me give you a brief preview and an opportunity to get involved.

Our training will go from Saturday, June 15 till the Tomato Fest 5k on Saturday, August 10.   We meet three times a week: Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m and Saturday morning at 7 a.m.

(1) Would you like to coach?  Last year we had over 200 participants, that we split into about 10 groups.  We have 2 or 3 coaches per group.  We'll need about 30 coaches to make this go smoothly.   Interested?  I can send you more details, email mark@eastnastyforlife.com.

(2) Sign up or tell a friend!  This program is doable and sustainable.  Do not think "The Biggest Loser".  This program is designed to be gradual because the goal is for exercise to become a daily part of each participant's life.  Registration will be available next week.
