Wednesday June 13 - You can't resist it, it's electric!

Route #10

Tonight is Route #10: Electric Slide. This route is awesome (with one of the greatest hills in East Nashville) but you need to be extra cautious at one particular intersection. Right before the three mile mark, you turn left onto 14th from Sevier. Before you turn left onto 14th from Sevier, you need to STOP, look for traffic, then cross the street and RUN ON THE SIDEWALK on the RIGHT SIDE of 14th. BE VERY CAREFUL CROSSING 14th! For those of you who know the area, make sure you alert those around you.

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please help us be good neighbors!

Wednesday June 6 - Global Running Day

Route #9

This week is Route #9: Nissan Stadium – home to your Tennessee Titans! Please be sure to cross 10th street at the crosswalk at 10th & Fatherland. The increase in construction and parking on 10th has made visibility much more difficult – so we need you to be sure to use the crosswalk and absolutely not cross in the middle of the road. Check out the route map on Strava: https://www.strava.com/routes/8843009

NOTE: Because of the CMA Fest, Titans Way road on the back side of the stadium will probably be closed. So, just cut that section out and run up 2nd Street in front of the stadium to get to Woodland. The route will be a little shorter, but it will get you to Pint Night a little faster. You're welcome.

Global Running Day and Pint Night

It's the first Wednesday of the month - which means it's Pint Night at Nashville Running Company! Remember that they have moved to a new location at 820 Woodland Street. Tonight's route conveniently runs right past it – or maybe just to it. No judgement :)

And in celebration of Global Running Day NRC will have lots going on. Lee says: "Swiftwick, Rock n Roll Races, Heroes 6K, Nashville Chiro, and Orange Theory will be here! We'll have apparel and gear on sale as well. And most importantly, beer!

Wednesday May 30 - Stay out of the middle of the road!

Route #8

Tonight is Route #8: Rick's Market - which is not only run number 8, but also a figure 8.

We're serious: Don't run in the middle of the road!

Every week we ask you all to stay to the left and run no more than 2 abreast, and every week some of you still run right out in the center of the road. Will you please help us be good citizens and neighbors and help maintain our club's standing in the community? Please don't open the club to scrutiny from the neighborhood and authorities and put us at risk by ignoring this simple request. If it's worth it to you to come out and run with us, all we ask is that you to follow our instructions. Thank you!

It's back! Join our 2018 'Potato to Tomato' Training - the best couch-to-5k program in Nashville!

We at East Nasty know that if you are not a runner it can be hard to get started. We also know that it IS possible to get yourself trained from being a non-runner to being able to run a 5K in 8 week's time. That is why every summer, we conduct a FREE couch-to-5k training program. The “Potato to Tomato” is an eight-week program designed to prepare ANYONE to run the YMCA East Nashville Tomato 5K. We especially want those of you who have never run before, or are coming off a long hiatus! Beginning June 16th we will meet three times a week for training: Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6pm, and Saturday mornings at 7am. Most of the time we will meet in Shelby Park at or near the Nature Center. After 8 weeks, we will culminate by running the YMCA East Nashville Tomato 5K race on August 11th 2017!

The 2018 Potato to Tomato program is starting soon! Come to an informational meeting at the Margaret Maddox Family YMCA in East Nashville on June 5th at 6:30pm, check out the details below and sign up! If you have any questions, email us at p2t@eastnastyforlife.com.

If you are currently a runner, you are welcome to join us, but only if you bring a friend who is not a runner! (Accomplished runners: if you are looking for a group to run with, join the regular East Nasty run on every Wednesday at at 6pm.)

When and where?

From June 16th through August 11, 2018 we will meet on Mondays at 6 p.m., Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. Our first meeting will be on Saturday June 16th at 7 a.m. outside of the entrance to the Shelby Park Nature Center. (Monday and Wednesday evenings we will always meet in Shelby Park at the Nature Center)

How?

During the course of 24 workouts, participants will progress from walk/runs to run/walks to steady running. Most workouts will only last between 30 and 45 minutes and we will celebrate our success by running the East Nashville Tomato 5K race on Saturday, August 11th ...without walking!

Wednesday May 23 - Little Hollywood

Route #7

This week we run through one of East Nashville’s most eclectic areas: Route #7: Little Hollywood. . The unique Spanish architecture makes this area unlike anything else in East Nashville. Read about it’s history and join us for a run tonight.

Lots of turns on this route. For everyone’s safety, PLEASE always stay on the left and cross the street ONLY AT INTERSECTIONS. Don’t run in the middle of the road or cross the road before you get to an intersection! There’s a brand new traffic light at Eastland and Chapel (near Rosepepper Cantina) – please obey the traffic signal and cross in the crosswalk! After the traffic signal, stay on the far left and stay single file over the bridge. Once you cross the gully, there will be a bike lane and then a sidewalk.

Why We Start in Pace Groups

The primary reason we leave in pace groups is the gaps it creates between groups of runners. This helps with traffic flow at intersections and crossings – allowing cars and others to get through between our pace groups. We don’t want to be a parade! So, listen up for your pace and start with that group, or wait for the next one. Please don’t start in between groups on your own. Our pace groups start at sub 8-min per mile and go in 30 second increments all the way to plus 10-min per mile.

East Nashville Tomato 5K

The East Nashville Tomato 5K is our 'home race' and every year East Nasty comes out in force. It's also the 5K that our P2Ters train to run! The race is set for August 11th, 2018 (Tomato Fest day!) and registration is open. Sign up now until June 22nd for just $30! Details and registration here: http://www.ymcamidtn.org/events/east-nashville-tomato-5k-2018

10 Years of Wednesday Nights – June 20th, 2018

Mark your calendars to join us on Wednesday night June 20th for our East Nasty 10 Year Wednesday Night Anniversary Run. Wednesday May 16 - Riverside

Route #6

This week is Route #6: Riverside. This route requires a couple of important safety notes:

  • First, 99% percent of the time we need you to run on the left side of the road against traffic, but on this route there is one section in Shelby Park where that changes. After passing the lake, as you are going up the hill out of Shelby Park, stay on the RIGHT side of the road. Stay alert as the hill and curve in the road make it difficult to see and be seen by cars. (This is the same hill we run DOWN after Mt Nasty on Route #12). When you reach the top, turn right and go under the train bridge, then turn left onto Riverside. Stay on the left side of Riverside in the bike lane. Remember – we share those roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars.
  • Second, and speaking of bike lanes – there is a lot of construction happening on Porter road and sections of the bike lanes are temporarily closed. PLEASE be careful, watch for traffic, and use your best judgment. Don’t just dart out into traffic. You can bypass most of it if you turn right off of Porter onto Benjamin, and then left on Scott which will take you back to Eastland. Also note the new traffic light at Eastland and Chapel!

It looks like Tennessee summer and humidity has already arrived - be sure to hydrate well before and during our runs!

'PR Bandits' Saturday Long Runs

East Nasty is once again partnering with the ‘PR Bandits’ who are hosting supported long runs on Saturday mornings throughout the summer and fall in 2018. Saturday supported runs will be held at various favorite running routes across Nashville. Most of the runs offer various distance options and all paces are welcome. Join the PR Bandits Facebook Group for more info, to get run invites, and to link up with other runners. This Saturday's run starts at Percy Warner Park and heads over to Radnor Lake. The run starts at 7am. (Note: Run start times will move to 6am in a few weeks.)

Details coming this week in a separate post...

Wednesday May 9 - Go 'head, be gone with it
en_mapbanner_route_05-jt.jpg

Route #5

This Wednesday is one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. And this week, Beth's second favorite singer, Justin Timberlake, is bringing sexy back to Bridgestone. Wave to JT and be extra courteous as you run through downtown as we expect some extra traffic. So go 'head, be gone with it - but PLEASE cross the street only in crosswalks and intersections (NEVER in the middle of the road or darting out into traffic), stop at stoplights, and slow down and use caution at intersections. Please be respectful of and courteous to pedestrians on the sidewalks downtown. Remember that when you run with us you are representing our organization – and that our club’s safety, reputation, and standing in the community is a responsibility you share in. Thanks for doing your part!

Pint Night

VIP. Drinks on ...NRC. It's Pint Night at Nashville Running Company after the run! We will run right past their new location towards the end of this route - keep an eye out for it! NRC always offers a 10% discount to East Nasty runners. Have a pint of some Yazoo and pick up some new gear while you’re there!

Cheer Station Winners!

They see what we're twerkin' with! We are very excited to let all of you know that our cheer station for the Rock n Roll Half Marathon came in 2nd place!! And we won $750!!! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported. This money will go into our general budget to offset our operating costs throughout the year (events, training, etc.).

PR Bandits Saturday Morning Long Runs

Once again in 2018, East Nasty is partnering with the ‘PR Bandits’ who are pickin' up the slack and bringing back supported long runs on Saturday mornings starting this week! Check them out on Facebook HERE and watch for their posts here on this blog. This Saturday’s run starts at 7:o0am at Bongo East.

Wednesday May 2 - Rest and Recover

Rest and Recover

Congrats to all of you who ran the St Jude Rock n Roll Nashville Half Marathon! or the Full! And how about that cheer station and party? It was a great weekend! Now it's time to take a well needed rest. But resting doesn't mean doing nothing. In fact, unless you have an injury, active recovery is better than passive recovery. Active recovery = super easy exercise (i.e. 60 - 70% of your max heart rate, light cross training, etc.) Also, a good rule of thumb is to take 1 recovery day for every 2 km of racing. For half marathoners, that means a good 10 days of easy exercise, for marathoners it's more like 3 weeks.

Route #4

This week we head back into Shelby Park for Route #4: The Big Shelby Loop. 99% percent of the time we need you to run on the left side of the road against traffic, but on this route it’s safer to run on the right side on Davidson Street once you’re in the park. When you make the right turn from Davidson to head up the Sevier/Naval hill, get back over to the left side of the road. The East Nashville Farmers Market starts up this week and we run right past it on this route – please be extra courteous and share the roads and greenway with the families and kids that will be out there. It is important for us to be good neighbors so we can continue to use the park.

NRC Pint Night will be back next week.

Same time and location as usual - 6pm at 11th & Holly.  More details to come, but plan on running The Nasty, some surprises, special giveaways, and hopefully seeing some old school faces!

Feel free to dress up or wear your EN gear. Bring a chair, food & drinks, cowbells and your SPIRIT FINGERS! We’ll have some tents set-up to provide shade. All are welcome– family, friends, kids, and pets. Wednesday April 25 - Race Week! Shirts!

This is a big week for a lot of East Nasties – it’s Race Week and the culmination of a lot of hard work! Enjoy this week and everything associated with the race, because you’ve earned it. We’ve got a lot of things going on over the next few days. Read on for what you need to know…

Route #3

Tonight's run is Route #3: Musica. ‘Musica’ is the name of the massive sculpture art piece at the center of the music row roundabout at the far end of the route. This is an out and back route, so you can choose your milage - perfect for all of you guys who are tapering this week. It’s about 4 miles if you turn around right after crossing the pedestrian bridge. It’s about 5 miles if you turn around at Cummins Station. And it’s 6.3 if you do the whole thing. This route is a great way to see downtown, but there are lots of downtown intersections. Please be careful, use crosswalks, and obey traffic signals! We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:30pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group.

Shirts and Tanks are in!

If you ordered one our 2018 race shirts or tanks, your order will be ready for pick up at the run TONIGHT! If you missed out on the order, we *may* have a very small number extras to sell later this week. Keep checking the blog for updates – we will announce any available extras here.

Race Week Details!

This is a lot of info, but we don’t want you to miss anything…

1) Tapering

Some classic Coach Mark Miller tapering advice: “There is nothing you can do between now and race day to run faster, but there is a lot you can do to make yourself run slower! It takes your body 7 to 10 days to gain any benefits from a hard workout. So, if you feel like you “missed” too many runs, don’t try to make them up this week. You’ll experience all the fatigue that comes with a workout but get none of the benefits by Saturday’s race. In other words, be smart this week. Allow your body to absorb all the work that you have put in over the last 16 weeks. Don’t do any hard/long running this week and don’t eat anything new or different. Just rest, relax, and pay attention to your hydration and nutrition – and hold back on the celebrating until Saturday night…”

2) Expo and Race Prep

Try to get the Expo to pick up your packet early as you can to avoid the rush. Go on Thursday if you can, because Friday evening will be crazy with all of the out-of-town racers arriving. Be drinking lots of fluids this whole week. Be sure to bank up on rest, too, Get a really good night's sleep on Thursday night - you may find it hard to relax on Friday night. Check this blog later this week for meet-up corral information.

3) Cheer Station

If you’re not racing on Saturday, of if you have friends or loved ones racing, then please join our official East Nasty Half Marathon Cheer Station! The most amazing thing you can experience during a difficult race is having your friends and family out there cheering for you and acknowledging your hard work. You don’t have to run on Saturday to come to the party. Come celebrate those who ran and those who cheered our East Nasty Runners. We are still looking for a few more people to help us set up, clean up, and help during the party. Check out the shifts and sign up with a friend. It’s fun, we promise!
