Wednesday Feb 28 - End of the Shortest Month

Route #9

This week is Route #9: Nissan Stadium – home to your Tennessee Titans! Please be sure to cross 10th street at the crosswalk at 10th & Fatherland. The increase in construction and parking on 10th has made visibility much more difficult – so we need you to be sure to use the crosswalk and absolutely not cross in the middle of the road. Check out the route map on Strava: https://www.strava.com/routes/8843009

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. You can READ HERE for more details on how our Wednesday night runs work. If you are a run/walker and/or want to get a head start, meet at 5:45pm and join our Lasty Nasty Group. Remember we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please help us be good neighbors!

No long run this weekend!

Our Half Marathon training group will not be meeting this Saturday. But this is not just a week off - we are encouraging everyone to race! Many of you guys may be running the Tom King Half or 5K, but whatever the distance, it doesn't matter, just get out there and test your fitness. Our next organized long run will be March 10th.

Call for New Board Member Candidates

East Nasty Running Club is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization and is governed by a Board of Directors. We are a ‘working board’ – meaning we are the hands and feet that make everything happen. Wednesday night runs, finances, party/event planning, fundraising, social media, merch and gear, etc are all decided upon, managed, operated, and executed by members of the Board. We are issuing a call for new Board Members and opening a candidate application process.

Interested? Read the detailed post here, and if you feel that serving East Nasty as a Board Member is something that may eb a good fit for you, then fill out the online form.

If you’re looking for a lower commitment way to get involved with East Nasty, we always have plenty of areas where we need volunteers. Check out Volunteer Page for more info!

Call for New Board Member Candidates

"We exist to make East Nashville a great place to live and run, and to make running accessible to everyone in our community." - East Nasty Running Club Mission Statement East Nasty Running Club is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization and is governed by a Board of Directors. We are a 'working board' – meaning we are the hands and feet that make everything happen. Wednesday night runs, finances, party/event planning, fundraising, social media, merch and gear, etc are all decided upon, managed, operated, and executed by members of the Board.

We are issuing a call for new Board Members and opening a candidate application process.

Being a Board Member is very rewarding, but also comes with responsibilities. Board Members are required to attend quarterly meetings (usually on weekends), be co-responsible for one quarter each year of our Wednesday night runs (set-up, tear down, communications, etc), and lead/serve the club in an area of general need (finance/accounting, fundraising/partnerships, social media, event planning, merch design & sales, etc.). Board Members are, of course, expected to be the finest reflection to the community of our club's values and mission. Our Board works best when it's made up of all kinds of runners both faster and slower, from 5Kers to Ultra-marathoners. You don't have to live in East Nashville, but our club's efforts are focused here so you should be very interested in and familiar with the area. We are looking for people who have a passion for fitness and community, who have skills, expertise, and ideas to help maintain and grow our organization, and who can make a sincere commitment to serving East Nasty Running Club.

If you are interested in serving our club on the Board, with an understanding of the commitment involved, then we invite you to fill out the online application form. If you have any specific questions, you can email Jeremy (president@eastnastyforlife.com) or Duane (duane@eastnastyforlife.com) or ask any current board member about their own experience. It would be a good idea to review our About page where you can also see our current leadership team. We will be accepting and reviewing applications through the end of March or so.  The Board will contact you after our next meeting (which is sometime in April) to set up an interview should it be a potential fit. Please be patient! Thank you, and ENFL!

Wednesday Feb 21 - Rick, Roy, and Tom

Route #8

This week it’s back towards Shelby for Route #8: Rick’s Market. So much has changed in East Nashville over the years and this route is no exception. Rick’s Market is now actually home to Roy's Meat Service. So, you can pick up your favorite cut of meat along with the “coldest beer in town”.

Be sure to wear something that creates or reflects light - it gets dark in parts of the park. And always remember that we share the roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars – please be courteous and help us be good neighbors!

Tuesday Night Workouts Continue

Our Tuesday night speed and hill workouts continue tonight. We meet every Tuesday at 6pm from now through April at the same location as our Wednesday night runs (11th and Holly). Please arrive a little early and be ready to run promptly at 6pm. There are no announcements time like Wednesdays – so don’t be late and miss the group! We will warm up together (by jogging to either Nissan stadium, a local track, or hill), perform our workout, then jog back together as a group.

Half Marathon Training Continues

This Saturday our Half Marathon Training run will be on the Harpeth River Greenway meeting at Edwin Warner Nature Center at 8am.

NRC Tom King Water Stop Volunteering

Once again Nashville Running Company is hosting a water stop for the Annual Tom King Classic Half Marathon on Saturday March 3rd! If you're not running in the race, then come help cheer on and support the half marathon runners during the race! The station is in its usual spot on Davidson near the boat ramp in Shelby Park - where you will see racers at miles 2.5 AND 10! All you need is a little spirit (and maybe the ability to hand out water). Check out the facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/410667836013335/

Wednesday Feb 14 - Short and Sweet

Route #7

This week we run Route #7: Little Hollywood. A short sweet route in case you need to get out quickly to get your romance on.

Lots of turns on this route. For everyone's safety, PLEASE always stay on the left and cross the street ONLY AT INTERSECTIONS. Don’t run in the middle of the road or cross the road before you get to an intersection! There's a brand new traffic light at Eastland and Chapel (near Rosepepper Cantina) - please obey the traffic signal and cross in the crosswalk! After the traffic signal, stay on the far left and stay single file over the bridge. Once you cross the gully, there will be a bike lane and then a sidewalk.

Call for New Board Members!

East Nasty is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization and is governed by a Board of Directors. We are a working board - the hands and feet that make everything happen (Wednesday night runs, finances, party/event planning, fundraising, social media, merch and gear, etc). Have you ever thought you could help out? Or have ideas to improve our club? Want to serve our club and community? East Nasty will soon be accepting applications for new board members! We will have an online application available soon - keep an eye out!

Wednesday Feb 7 - Porter Predicament & Pints

Route #6

This week is Route #6: Riverside. This route requires a couple of important safety notes this week.

  • First, 99% percent of the time we need you to run on the left side of the road against traffic, but on this route there is one section in Shelby Park where that changes. After passing the lake, as you are going up the hill out of Shelby Park, stay on the RIGHT side of the road. Stay alert as the hill and curve in the road make it difficult to see and be seen by cars. (This is the same hill we run DOWN after Mt Nasty on Route #12). When you reach the top, turn right and go under the train bridge, then turn left onto Riverside. Stay on the left side of Riverside in the bike lane. Remember – we share those roads with walkers, cyclists, and cars.
  • Second, and speaking of bike lanes - there is a lot of construction happening on Porter road and sections of the bike lanes on both sides are temporarily closed. PLEASE be careful, watch for traffic, and use your best judgment. Don't just dart out into traffic. You can bypass most of it if your turn right off of Porter onto Benjamin, and then left on Scott which will take you back to Eastland. Also note the new traffic light at Eastland and Chapel!

It's still dark - so keep wearing your reflective and lighted gear.

Pint Night at NRC

It's finally February - and that means Pint Night at Nashville Running Company! Come by NRC after the run for a pint of Yazoo and 10% off your in store purchase. There's also specials on $50 shoes, $75 shoes, and 50% off select apparel. Team Magic and Orange Theory Fitness will both be there as well.

Tuesday Feb 6 - Speed Work is Back!
rudyrulaspeed.jpg

Tuesday Night Workouts

Our Tuesday night speed workouts begin TONIGHT! We will meet every Tuesday at 6pm through April at 11th and Holly (the same location as our Wednesday night runs). Please arrive a little early and be ready to run PROMPTLY at 6pm. Bring a stopwatch or GPS! We will warm up together (by jogging to either Nissan stadium, a local track, or hill), perform our workout, then jog back together as a group. These kind of structured workouts are a great way to improve your running fitness and will help improve your running IQ.  You’ll learn about tempo runs, hills repeats and track work. We’ll do some workouts by distance, some by time and some by “feel”.  This is also a great way to get to know some new folks in a smaller setting. Bree Block and Andy VanLandingham will be heading these up!

Wednesday Jan 31 - How is it STILL January?

Route #5

It's STILL January. What's up with that? Amiright? So pint night will have to wait until next week. Nevertheless, this Wednesday is one of our most popular runs: Route #5: Walking Bridge. It’s always fun to run across the bridge and through downtown. But running downtown comes with a little bit of extra traffic. So, we implore you - please cross the street only in crosswalks and intersections (NEVER in the middle of the road or darting out into traffic), stop at stoplights, and slow down and use caution at intersections. Please be respectful of and courteous to pedestrians on the sidewalks downtown. Remember that when you run with us you are representing our organization - and that our club’s safety, reputation, and standing in the community is a responsibility you share in. Thanks for doing your part!

There are also a few different calculators on Runner's World at https://www.runnersworld.com/pace-calculators. It's not too late to join our free training group - get info and sign up on our Half Marathon Training Page. This Saturday we head to Percy Warner Park for some hill-tastic fun in one of our city's best treasures! Be sure to keep an eye out for any flying monkeys... There's also a potluck brunch after the run!

Wednesday Jan 24 - Run all day err day...

Route #4

This week we head back into Shelby Park for Route #4: The Big Shelby Loop. 99% percent of the time we need you to run on the left side of the road against traffic, but on this route it’s safer to run on the right side on Davidson Street once you’re in the park. When you make the right turn from Davidson to head up the Sevier/Naval hill, get back over to the left side of the road. Be sure to wear something that creates some light - it gets pretty dark in parts of the park.

Route #3

This week is Route #3: Musica. This is an out and back route, so you can choose your mileage. It’s about 4 miles if you turn around right after crossing the pedestrian bridge. It’s about 5 miles if you turn around at Cummins Station. And it’s about 6.3 if you do the whole thing. This route is a great way to see downtown, but there are lots of intersections and traffic on this route. Please be especially courteous, use crosswalks, and obey traffic signals - don't dart out into traffic!

We meet at the corner of 11th & Holly at 6pm. We run every Wednesday – rain or shine, hot or cold. And it's gonna be cold this week - somewhere around 20 degrees they say. Brrrrr! Be sure to dress in layers and wear a hat! Here's a great webtool from Runner's World on how to figure out what to wear in what temperatures and conditions: https://www.runnersworld.com/what-to-wear

Wednesday Jan 10 - How It Works

We had so much info to share last week that we forgot to officially welcome everyone to the winter quarter of East Nasty! We started our cycle of 12 runs last week and we continue this week with Route #2: ‘Round the Bird. This run takes into Shelby Park and is a figure-8 route that crosses over itself. Be sure to high five each other at the intersection! We should have some nice temps for a Wednesday in January, but it gets pretty dark in parts of the park so remember to wear something that creates and/or reflects light. Board members leading this quarter of Wednesday nights are Heidi Huerta and Alyce Scrivner. Look for them making announcements and getting the run going.

And since we are back at the beginning of our cycle, this is a great opportunity for a refresher on how our runs work…

How It Works

We meet every Wednesday, year round, for a run at 6pm. This is our ‘main event’ and the best way to get plugged into the group. Rain or shine, hot or cold – we run. There is nothing to sign up to participate, no email list to join – just show up. We meet at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville. We have 12 different runs (each one 3-6 miles) that we follow sequentially each week. There are usually around 100+ runners on any given Wednesday evening.

  1. Wednesday morning – Check the blog for any updates and changes, and reacquaint yourself with that week’s route.  Print out the route if you think you might get lost.
  2. As you are arriving, the map of the route for that night should be hanging on the porch of the yellow house.
  3. 5:45pm (5:30pm for routes #3 and #12) – The Lasty Nasties start their run.  Lasty Nasty is our walk/run group that starts before the main group. If you typically run slower than 12 minutes per mile you should consider joining this group. Here is their Facebook page - it's a great way to get connected to other run/walkers.
  4. 6:07pm – We begin announcements which should take about a minute or two.
  5. 6:10pm – Greet someone new, and prepare for your run.
  6. 6:11pm (ish) We don’t just start running en masse. We leave in pace groups, and someone will be starting those groups from fastest to slowest – starting usually with 7:30 and faster pace, and going in 30 second increments (7:30 – 8:00, 8:00 – 8:30, etc…), with a short gap between groups. The last group is 10 minutes per mile and over.
  7. During the run safety is priority number one! We encourage you to run as hard as you want, but this is not a race. So, (1) run on the sidewalk as much as possible, (2) wear something that creates or reflects light, (3) be careful at intersections, don’t assume cars are going to stop, and (4) stop if one of your fellow runners needs help.
  8. Post-run – There is nothing permanent scheduled for after the run, but there are often post run pint nights or other happenings. Bring a change of clothes (or not) and head over to 3 Crow or one of the other local establishments for a drink and/or some dinner. Of course, please be exceptionally nice to your servers!

Parking: It’s getting more and more difficult to navigate traffic and parking in the 5 Points area with all the growth. You can find street parking in and around 5 Points, but be mindful of fire hydrants and street corners (30 feet minimum distance per the city), No Parking signs, construction areas, and blocking in other cars. Do not park behind the YCAP building, the YCAP gym, or in the construction zone in the alleys. Both buildings host groups that meet on Wednesday evenings and we need to be respectful of their property and access to their vehicles. Always lock your vehicle and hide your valuables – don’t be an easy ticket or target.

2018 Half Marathon Training has begun!

It's not too late to join our Half Marathon Training! Get all the details and sign up on our Half Marathon Training page HERE then join us this Saturday at 8am at Nissan Stadium.
