Thanksgiving Eve...

We're on.

Yes, we still meet the day before Thanksgiving.  In fact, what better way to eat guilt free than to get in a good run the night before!

6 p.m. Corner of 11th and Holly.   Route #8.  Wear reflective gear.

Wow...

Check out this article.  One of the most fascinating running-related stories I've read in a long time.  It highlights the fact, that under the veneer of normalcy, people are crazy...especially us runners.

Caffeine

This morning (Monday) on NPR there was a story about endurance athletes and caffeine.  So grab a cup of coffee, a caffeinated Gu and listen to this story.

See you on Wednesday.

Dog Food Drive

Remember the mission of East Nasty:  "We love our neighborhood, and we exist to make East Nashville a great place to live and run, and to make running accessible to everyone in our community."  In that light, sometime this week, Drew Landerman from the TN CO-OP is going to drop off 960 pounds of dog food for East Can.   That food, purchased with your donations, combined with the bags of food you brought last week, yielded well over 1200 pounds of food for East Can. Thanks guys!

Tonight's Run - Route #7

Little Hollywood - 3.2 miles. Meet at 6 p.m at 11th & Holly. Wear reflective gear (and even a headlamp, too).

NRC Pint Night

After the run, everyone is invited down to Nashville Running Company for the monthly pint night.

2013 Half and Full Marathon Training

Once again, remember the mission of East Nasty:  "We love our neighborhood, and we exist to make East Nashville a great place to live and run, and to make running accessible to everyone in our community."   To that end, we offer free half-marathon or full marathon training starting in January. While the training is free, it does not mean that everybody is ready to train for a half-marathon. Right now is the time that you need to be thinking about whether you want to try it or not. If you want to join us, we ask that you be capable of running 5 miles without walking before January. Even better, would be if you were running 3-5 miles at least 3 times a week. This is not because we are elitist - it's pretty obvious that we are not.  This prerequisite is to keep you, the runner, uninjured and excited about running. Going from 3 miles to 13.1 miles might not seem like a lot, but in reality it is a huge jump in mileage and can lead to serious burn-out/injury.  So if you are not at 5 miles yet, you have 6 weeks to get there, and then join us in January!

Hoodies

Thursday is the last day to order our Fall hoodie. Try one on at Nashville Running Company after the run tonight to find your size, then order one online here.

See you tonight! ENFL! - Mark

Dog Food

This week is our East Can dog food drive  East Can rescues and finds homes for abandoned animals in East Nashville.   They try to alleviate any financial pressure that comes with fostering a dog by providing food.  It's a great organization and there are a couple of ways you can help:

1) Bring $10 this week.  We are getting a deal where we can get a 40 pound bag of dog food at cost  ($15.)  I love the sight of 100 bags of dog food piled up, but this year instead of bringing a bag of food this year, bring cash.   It will give us way more bag for the buck!

2) Adopt or foster a dog.   If you cannot adopt a dog, consider fostering.  Email Elizabeth if you are able.  info@eastcan.org

The Run

Run #6.   Since the time change, reflective gear is a must.   Headlamps are even better.

Wednesday, 6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly

Looking Ahead

December 12.  East Nasty Christmas Party.  Plan on joining us after the run!

Halloween!

Halloween!

Today is Halloween.  I don't know exactly what to expect, but I do know that 5 Points is going to be packed.  There is a pub crawl, tons of trick-or-treaters, and of course, our weekly Wednesday night run.  It's an exciting night to be around East Nashville.  Run #6 takes us onto Eastland, which is swarming with kids on Halloween.  This is why we are going to repeat last week's Run #5.  (We'll do run #6 next week.)  Come on out and enjoy the festivities!

6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly.  (Wear reflective gear!)

1/2 Marathon/Marathon training

East Nasty started as a group of friends training for the Country Music Half-Marathon and we have offered free training ever since!   This year we are going to train for the Country Music Full Marathon as well as the Half, and there is also a group training for the Rock and Roll New Orleans races.  We'll have details about training for the Country Music races up soon.  Plan on joining us (did I mention it's free..) beginning the first weekend in January.   NOLA training begins this weekend!

NOLA training:   Sunday, November 4th at 9 a.m. Shelby Park.

Dog Food Drive

On November 7th, we are going to have a dog food drive for EastCan.  If you are able, please bring a bag of dog food to the run on that night.   EastCan uses this food to help alleviate some of the financial burden of fostering or adopting an animal.

12/12/12

December 12th is the date for our annual Christmas party.   We'll have a bunch of great stuff to unveil.   Mark the date in your calendar!

New Hoodies

We will have new hoodies available for order in the Store later this week!

See you tonight! - Mark

October 24...

The route

Wednesday, October 24.  6 p.m. @ the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.

This week is Route #5.  This route takes us across the walking bridge and back to the East Side on Woodland.  Take a moment to check out the map, and volunteer to be a group leader.

It's dark for real now.

It no longer dusk, it's dark.   Time for reflective gear.  If you don't own any, don't fret...Nashville Running Company will be there with various types of gear for $20.

1/2 Marathon and Marathon Training

Every year East Nasty offers free 1/2 marathon and full marathon training for the country music marathon.   We have weekend long runs and Thursday night workouts.   There will be Saturday or Sunday morning training option for the long run  (I guess you could do both...)  and we'll have pace leaders for half-marathon goal paces of 1:30, 1:45, 2:00, 2:15 and 2:30.     What do you need to do to join?   Just show up.  We'll have more details coming soon.

Yellow House open house.

The YMCA runs a program called "ArtEmbrace" out of the yellow house at 11th and Holly.  Have you ever wondered what they do?  Well, you will have an opportunity to find out on Wednesday.  They are having an open house, so plan on staying around, introducing yourself to Leslie Gregg and finding out what they do!  (PS there will be a lot of kid activities...)

See you Wednesday!  And remember to wear your reflective gear and stay out of the roads while running!

October 17 - 1/2 Marathon Leaders

The Run

6 p.m. at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville.

This week we are heading back into Shelby Park for Run #4: Big Shelby Loop.  If you don't have reflective gear yet, Nashville Running Company has made it easy: just bring $20 and there will be an assortment of gear to choose from. Please do not blow this off and assume that reflective gear is for other people. We want everyone to come home safely! Parts of Shelby can get pretty dark - this would be a good week to bring a headlamp if you have one as well.

2013 1/2 Marathon Training

Starting in January, the 2013 edition of our Country Music Half or Full Marathon training will begin. Right now we are looking for some volunteers. Specifically, we are looking for pace leaders. Pace leaders train a group to run a specific goal pace for the half marathon, and will finish the training by leading them through the 2013 Country Music Half Marathon (on April 27) at that pace. Leading a training group is a great way to give back, not to mention a lot of fun. We need leaders for half marathon goal times of 1:30, 1:45, 2:00, 2:15 and 2:30. If you can commit, we are willing to pay your entry into the race. Email Mark at mark@eastnastyforlife.com.

Wednesday October 10th

Lots of stuff to share this week...

The Run

Tonight is Run #3: Musica Out-and-back. Its an out-and-back route - so you can turn around at any point you like for what ever distance you like. If you run over to the other side of the walking bridge and back, that is about 4 miles. If you run to Demonbreun and 8th and back, that is about 5 miles. If you run all the way to the Musica statue and back, that is about 6.4 miles. Check out the map, learn the route (its super easy), and help us by volunteering to be a route leader. We meet at 11th & Holly at 6pm. Two important reminders: 1) wear reflective gear and 2) please stay out of the middle of the road. There are plenty of sidewalks just about  the whole way tonight so you have no excuses.

NRC Pint Night

After the run come down to Nashville Running Company in 5 Points for some free beer and to celebrate all the great races that so many of us ran this past weekend - StumpJump 11 miler and 50K, the Chicago Marathon, and the Music City Half Marathon. Lots of you guys ran new PRs (including to Greg Kyle's incredible 2:49:31 at the Findlay Marathon in Ohio) - congrats!

Hands on Nashville ReCYCLE for Kids

Hands on Nashville is launching a new effort this fall called ReCYCLE for Kids. It's a bike drive over the next two saturdays to collect used kids' bikes. The goal is to collect 300 bikes that volunteers will refurbish over the next two months, and then gift them in December to deserving kids who may not otherwise have the opportunity to own their own bike. Bring your used kids bikes this Saturday Oct 13th to Hands On Nashville's Office at The Trolley Barns at Rolling Mill Hill (37 Peabody St) from 10am to 4pm. Get more more info (including net weeks drop off locations and times) here.

Shelby Park Centennial Celebration this Saturday

Thanks to your generosity, East Nasty was able to donate $1000 to the Friends of Shelby Park organization to help maintain and preserve our beautiful park that we run in so very often, This Saturday is the Shelby Park Centennial Celebration that will be held in the park from 10am to 5pm with food, games, music and more. Come out and represent East Nasty as we celebrate our wonderful park! More info on Facebook here.

Wednesday Sept 26 - Start All Over Again

One of my favorite bands: "As soon as you understand that the end is not the end, you can start all over again."

Run #1

Last week, 'The Nasty' may have felt like 'the end' for some of us, but it only means that we are starting our 12 run sequence all over again with Run #1! This means some shorter runs - beginning this week with an easy 5k that goes down Shelby, through the park, and comes back up Holly Street. If you want to run longer, there are a couple 2-mile add on loops (Run #0 and JPs Extra 2) that many people complete before or after the “regular” run. We meet at 6pm at the corner of 11th and Holly in East Nashville. When we gather, please stay out of the road so we dont hold up traffic. And as always, please stay out of the middle of the road during the run. Check out the map of the route and come join us tonight for the run and then 2-for-1 beers at 3 Crow afterwards.

Remember, now that its getting darker, we need you to wear reflective gear each Wednesday night through the spring. Nashville Running Company will have reflective items available for sale before the run for $20.

Shelby Park 100 Year Celebration

Last week we asked you to give $5 towards Shelby Park - and thanks to your generosity, we were able to donate $1000 to the Friends of Shelby Park! FOSP is an organization that helps protect, maintain, and improve our beloved park. Richard Bess from the organization will be out Wednesday night to talk about the big 100 Year Celebration on Oct 13th and how you can help be a part of it.

See you tonight! -Duane

Wednesday September 19: The Nasty!

This week is The Nasty and I know everyone is crazy excited/terrified, but we have a couple of important announcements, so please take a moment to read...

1) Reflective gear!

It's that time of year again. As runners we often forget how hard it is for drivers to see pedestrians at dusk. So let's all be safe and put on some reflective gear. Nashville Running Company is going to have some reflective options for sale on Wednesdays for $20. Once it gets dark for real, we're going to encourage reflective gear and lights!

2) Morning Runs are ending this week

Of course you can still run in the mornings, and you can still meet at 5:50 a.m. at 11th and Holly. But this is going to be the last organized Wednesday morning run.

3) Bring $5

Shelby Park is getting a face-lift. To celebrate they are having a big 100th anniversary party on October 13, and they are looking for some sponsors to make it a grand event. East Nasty wants to present the park with a big "thanks for letting 250 of us run through here", in the form of a check!  So please bring $5 to donate to the cause.  This is a great affirmation of our mission: to make East Nashville a great place to live and to run.

4) New Orleans Rock and Roll Half and Full Marathon

There are a bunch of East Nasties that will be heading down to the Big Easy for the 2013 edition of this race.   Rachel Schaffer has created a Facebook Group to help disseminate information. Check it out if you are interested, then sign up before the price goes up!

speaking of half or full marathons...

5) Start Thinking about Country Music Marathon Training

East Nasty's free half or full marathon training begins the first Sunday in January.   We'll have a meeting later this fall, but we would like to have more pace leaders this year. If you are willing to train/lead a group through the half in 2:30, 2:15, 2:00, 1:45 or 1:30 be ready to volunteer!  More information coming soon!

The Nasty

This week is indeed The Nasty. 6 miles of blood, sweat, and hills - including the loved/hated Mout Nasty. Complete the run, earn our sticker, have 2 for 1 beers at 3 Crow. Our morning run meets at 5:50am and evening run meets at 6pm. Both meet at 11th & Holly. (There is a group of non-fasties that are planning to start the evening run a little early at 5:30pm. Show up early if you want to join them.)

See you Wednesday - with your reflective gear! - Mark
